Frequently Asked Questions

What is an escape room?

An escape room is an interactive puzzle where you are locked into a room and given a series of clues and hints to find your way out. The Old Castlemaine Gaol Escape Rooms use the unique venue and challenge you to break out of your cell before the Warden comes back.  Our new room Break In is for 12+ (one adult and one child pairing). In this game, the adult is locked in the cell, and the child is on the outside assisting with finding clues.

How many people can I have in a room?

You will be divided into groups of two (odd numbers will have three to a cell). We currently have 5 rooms per game, so a maximum of 10 people per session.

What if we are under 18?
Break In is suitable for kids aged 12+, Break Out is only for adult 18+.

Do we participate with others?
No, you will only be grouped with those you booked with. For example if a group of 5 booked, we would put 2 into one room, and 3 into another. There may be other groups participating in other cells in the same session.

What if we get stuck?
Our ‘Warden’ will be there the whole time to help if required, and hints are offered at 35 minutes to point you in the right direction.

Are we actually locked in?
The adult in the group is locked in, but the child is outside. You must work together to help the adult escape.

Can we take mobile phones?
You may bring your mobile phone to the event. You may use your phone inside the prison but not while inside the room. No photos of the rooms are permitted at anytime.

Is it safe?
The puzzles and clues inside the room are all safe and have been tested thoroughly. The door and lock, if handled incorrectly, could cause harm, but we ensure all participants are aware of the correct way to open, and handle the lock from the inside.

What should I wear?
Casual and comfortable is best.

Can we look around afterwards?
We offer all our Escape Room participants to take a photo in our mugshot room to remember your escape from the Old Castlemaine Gaol. The gaol is open to anyone who wishes to have a look through.

What if I arrive late?
We will attempt to contact you after ten minutes. If there are other bookings, we will commence them, and you may have to wait until these groups have started to be briefed.
If there are no other bookings we will wait 20 minutes, after which we will close the session, and you will be required to rebook.

Do we need a reservation?
Yes. The experience is by appointment only.

Are there toilets?
There are toilets available inside the gaol, and outside.

How do I cancel?
You may cancel using a link in your confirmation email or by contacting us.
Cancellations with 48 hours notice receive a full refund.
Inside 48 hours will not receive a refund, unless at the discretion of management.

Can I change or transfer my booking?
Bookings cannot be transferred. Changes can be made provided the original person remains on the booking. Please notify us of any changes to your booking.

Can I add extra people?
Yes - please contact us to arrange.

What if someone cannot make it?
Please notify us in advance so that we can make any necessary arrangements.

When should we arrive?
You should aim to arrive at the venue 5-10 minutes early but no earlier than 15 minutes.

Is there secure storage?
We encourage participants to bring their valuables with them.

Can we bring food and drink?
No food or drink allowed anywhere inside the prison.
Bottled water is okay.

Can we drink alcohol beforehand?
The event is alcohol free (.00)
Any person suspected of having consumed alcohol will be refused entry.
